Campaign – diphtheria
The campaign focuses on increasing awareness about the diphtheria outbreak among Aboriginal people, and encourages people to protect themselves through vaccination and prompt action for symptoms such as skin sores or sore throats.
Objectives
- Increase awareness among Aboriginal people about the diphtheria outbreak, associated health risks, and eligibility for free vaccination.
- Direct people to trusted sources of information (HealthyWA) and local vaccination services.
- Encourage timely uptake of diphtheria-containing vaccines.
Key messages
- Vaccination is the most effective protection against severe illness due to diphtheria.
- The diphtheria vaccine is safe and has been around for more than 100 years.
- Diphtheria vaccinations are available for eligible people who have not received a diphtheria-containing vaccine in the past five years.

- Aboriginal people in WA
- Patient-facing health care workers in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields and Midwest regions
