Immunisation education

The online training course Understanding Vaccines and the National Immunisation Program (external site) is run by South Australia Health and is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of immunology and immunisation, enabling nurses to become confident and competent immunisation providers.

Once you register to commence the program, you have access to the course for 20 weeks. Upon completion of the course, 70 CPD/PDP points are earned (the equivalence of 70 hours online learning). The cost is $385, inclusive of GST.

The course is endorsed by the Health Education Services Australia (HESA) (external site), and is an approved program of study for WA eligible nurses to meet one of the WA Health Structured Administration Supply Arrangement (SASA) requirements.

Midwives play a key role in immunisation, often providing a baby’s first vaccination and are a trusted source of information for parents to be.

The Understanding Vaccines for Midwives – vaccination requirements during pregnancy and early childhood (external site) course, run by South Australia Health, is an introduction to immunisation that covers key vaccines and topics relevant to midwives. The course aims to equip midwives with knowledge and skills to feel confident to engage with parents on the topic of vaccines and vaccination.

Once you register to commence the program, you have access to the course for 20 weeks. Upon completion of the course, 20 CPD/PDP points are earned (the equivalence of 20 hours online learning). The cost is $125, inclusive of GST.

The course meets one of the requirements of the WA Health Structured Administration Supply Arrangements (SASA). Located under the CEO of Health SASA accordion.

Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners (AHW and AHP) in Western Australia who wish to administer vaccines and promote the importance of immunisation are to complete the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) immunisation course (or equivalent course) to immunise under the CEO of Health SASA. All AHWs and AHPs with a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice are encouraged to undertake the course.

This course was developed by the WA Department of Health’s Communicable Disease Control Directorate in partnership with the AHCWA and is delivered over 2-3 days. depending on participant numbers. Pharmacists play an important role in immunisation in Western Australia for people aged 5 years and above.

All training requirements for pharmacists are outlined in the Structured Administration Supply Arrangement (SASA) requirements.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia (PGA) and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) both offer immunisation courses for Community Pharmacists:

• Information on the approved PGA immunisation training courses (external site) for pharmacists.
• The PSA Vaccination Hub (external site) links to pharmacist vaccination and refresher courses, as well as pharmacist-related vaccination resources.

Training courses are also provided to pharmacy students by universities.

The online training course Immunisation: a training course for GPs – Immunisation Learning Courses (external site) is developed by South Australia, and is designed to provide general practitioners with knowledge and skills to competently deliver safe and high quality immunisation services. The course is RACGP CPD approved, and ACRRM Accredited.

Once you register to commence the program, you have 20 weeks to complete the course. Upon completion of the course, 6 CPD/PDP points are earned (the equivalence of 6 hours online learning). The cost is $250, inclusive of GST.

The immunisation updates have been developed by the Communicable Disease Control Directorate (CDCD), WA Department of Health. These online modules creates a solution to the provision of immunisation updates, in an efficient and effective manner for immunisation service providers.

Immunisation providers that are not working under the CEO of Health SASA (e.g. working in general practices or in a hospital under a medical order) are recommended, but not required, to complete this training.

Any major changes to information in the modules will be communicated via Vaccine Updates. If you are not already subscribed to Vaccine Updates, you can find more information at Immunisation provider information and resources (health.wa.gov.au).

• The online immunisation updates are provided free of charge.
• The online immunisation updates are available for single user use only.
• The online immunisation education accounts are temporary. Please following instructions below on how to access the modules.  
• Within the slides are interaction tabs which you can use by clicking on the PREV and NEXT buttons. Clicking on these will take you to the next content slide.
• The program should be usable on most desktop browsers such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, and is best accessed through the use of a desktop or a laptop. The use of iPads and mobile phones is not recommended as the content may not launch in the Articulate Mobile Player.

Users with existing accounts

1.If the Rise Immunisation Education URL goes straight to the ‘Sign-in’ page, the user’s account already exists, and users can log in with their current log-in details. If these details are forgotten, then the user can select the ‘Forgot Password’ option to create new log-in details. An instructional email from Rise Education will be sent straight away.

2.If the user does not receive an email from Rise Education to create new log-in details, or their current log-in details are no longer valid, users will need to simply use the link in Step 1 below to re-register.

Process to access education modules

1. In order to access the online education modules, users will need to register via this link
2. Users will need to register with their preferred email address.
   
3. User will then receive an email with a link to create an account.
   
4. Once registered, click on the ‘Browse Library’ option to view all the modules.
   
5. Save the URL: immunisation-education.rise.comin your favourites for easy access to the course.

Note: No record of any assessments or certificate are kept. After successful completion of the respective update, it is up to the individual to save a PDF (via the print function) or print a copy of their own certificate.

Troubleshooting tips 

• Please allow pop-ups from the program to allow full usage of the immunisation updates. This can be done from the tools tab in your browser settings.
• If when you access the modules, it shows your completion from a previous year, try refreshing your cache/delete your browser history.  Once the cache is cleared, the module should be current, and the date should change when you complete the module.

Immunisation update module

The Immunisation update module has been developed by WA Department of Health to provide all WA immunisation providers access to current immunisation education. Immunisation providers working under the CEO of Health SASA must complete this update annually.

The update comprises of 4 modules including scenarios and quizzes. It will take approximately 4 hours to complete and can be completed over multiple sessions.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) module

The RSV module has been developed by WA Department of Health to support immunisation providers in the implementation of the WA Health RSV Infant and Maternal Immunisation Program. This education module is a requirement of the RSV Immunisation CEO of Health Structured Administration and Supply Arrangements (SASA).

This module should take approximately 45 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions. 

Influenza module

The Influenza module has been developed as an annual refresher for immunisation providers and provides the user with up-to-date influenza immunisation information. Please refer to the education requirements table (PDF 25KB) to see if this applies to you.

• This module should take approximately 2 hours and can be completed over multiple sessions.
• You are required to complete the final assessment with a passing score of 80%.

Shingles module

The Shingles module has been developed to support immunisation providers who wish only to undertake a refresher in this topic. This module provides the user with an overview of shingles vaccine and vaccination.

This module should take approximately 45 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.

Public health perspective module

The Public health perspective module has been developed to support immunisation providers who wish only to undertake a refresher in this topic. This module provides the user with an overview of public health including the immune system and health promotion.

This module should take approximately 45 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.

1) Online COVID-19 Immunisation Education Program (SA Health)

Immunisation providers that are working under the CEO of Health SASA and administering the COVID-19 vaccine are required to have either completed the Commonwealth COVID-19 Vaccination Training (this course has now ceased) OR the SA Health COVID-19 Immunisation Education Program.

The SA Health COVID-19 Immunisation Education Program (external site) provides the fundamental information to equip health professionals involved in the administration of COVID-19 vaccines with the knowledge and skills to competently deliver COVID-19 vaccines.

The Program is self-paced but must be completed within a period of 8 weeks from the date of registration. Successful completion of this course supports the approved training requirements in the CEO of Health Registered Nurses and Community Pharmacist SASAs (Structured Administration and Supply Arrangements).

2) WA supplementary module for health professionals

The WA supplementary information for health professionals module (external site) should take approximately 15 minutes to complete and is to be read in conjunction with relevant area service developed standard operating procedures to deliver vaccination services.

Whilst medical practitioners (GPs) and Registered Nurses do not need to work under the authority of a SASA, as they can independently order and administer vaccines, it is highly recommended they complete the short WA supplementary module which outlines specific WA information and processes.

3) VaccinateWA training module (WA Health staff only)

The VaccinateWA education module provides an overview of the system used to support the end to end delivery of COVID-19 vaccines. Access to the VaccinateWA application, training module and user guides are available through VaccinateWA (WA Health staff only).

To contribute towards eligibility to practice as an immunisation provider in WA, approved immunisation education programs listed below and/or are accredited by Health Education Services Australia (HESA) (external site) are recognised by WA Health.

Note: Immunisation providers still need to adhere to other additional requirements to support authority to practice, e.g. organisational requirements or the SASA, if applicable.

The immunisation clinical competency assessment guide will assist professionals to identify levels of competency in their immunisation practice. Whilst the guide is optional it can be a good reference for immunisation providers who are at varying levels of competency. As such, the assessment tool is not a mandatory requirement of the immunisation course. 

The Understanding Vaccines and the National Immunisation Program course covers comprehensive clinical knowledge relating to immunisation.

Healthcare providers who are not yet working or are returning to work in immunisation-related fields (in any capacity) will need to undertake additional educational requirements, as referenced within the table below:

The comprehensive Understanding Vaccines and the National Immunisation Program course is delivered entirely online. Successful completion of the course provides the educational requirements for immunisation practice in Western Australia. Healthcare providers need to adhere to additional requirements depending on their place of employment e.g. in-clinic supervision.

The Structured Administration Supply Arrangements (SASA) may be relevant to your practice, depending on your place of employment, and should be reviewed to assess if you need to meet additional requirements to safely practice immunisation in Western Australia.
