Four new measles cases detected in the Pilbara

WA Health is urging Pilbara residents to remain vigilant for measles symptoms following the confirmation of four new cases.

The cases are in Hedland and Karratha and are being investigated to identify the source.

This brings the total number of measles cases in Western Australia to 43 in 2025.

Communicable Disease Control Directorate’s Public Health Physician, Dr Jelena Maticevic, said the new cases highlight the increased risk of further spread within the Pilbara community.

“Measles is highly infectious, and anyone who has not been fully vaccinated is at risk of developing the disease if they are exposed,” she said.

“Anyone experiencing measles symptoms should be tested immediately.”

Early symptoms of measles include fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose and sore eyes, followed by a red, non-itchy rash that typically begins on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

People with measles are infectious for several days before and after the onset of the rash.

Testing for measles is available at the following locations, please call ahead before attending and wear a mask:

  • Hedland Health Campus
  • Karratha Health Campus
  • Roebourne Hospital
  • Onslow Health Service
  • Newman Health Service

WA Health has updated its measles alert to include new exposure locations associated with the four new cases.

These include the Hedland and Karratha Health Campus Emergency Departments, Port Hedland Boulevard Shopping Centre, South Hedland Shopping Centre, Adventist Fellowship, as well as various fast food and retail outlets.

Residents and travellers in the Pilbara are encouraged to check the WA Health website regularly for updates.

Anyone concerned they or a family member may have measles should seek medical advice.

Contact Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 or call ahead to your GP or emergency department before attending, to help prevent further spread of the infection.
