2024 finalists
Midwifery team – Rockingham Peel Group
In response to poor culture outcomes in previous Your Voice in Health survey results, the Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) midwifery team prioritised transforming their team workplace culture.
Adopting a multi-faceted approach saw the team implement professional, personal and team initiatives.
They engaged in culture workshops to develop signature values derived from the SMHS values and firmly embedded them. Open communication, learning-focused discussions, and clear goals were prioritised.
The team arranged education and training initiatives for all levels through multi-disciplinary team clinical simulations, supported junior colleagues via graduate and mentor programs, and embedded a team ethos of “knowing each other”.
Celebrating achievements, participating in social activities, and promoting inclusivity further strengthened their positive culture, as evidenced by their improved retention levels, sought after graduate programs, and a 28 per cent reduction in sick leave.
Subsequent survey results showed a substantial increase in staff satisfaction with 89 per cent of staff reporting their role enabled them to make good use of their skills/ abilities and 83 per cent reporting manager support with their goals – an improvement of 33 per cent since the 2021 survey.
Peel Health Campus transition and commissioning – South Metropolitan Health Service
In this large and complex change management project, the SMHS Peel Health Campus (PHC) Transition and Commissioning (T&C) team worked to safely and seamlessly transfer staff and services from Ramsay Health Care (RHC) to SMHS, and back into public hands.
As a major initiative for the State Government, the team were tasked with ensuring the seamless transfer of RHC staff and services to SMHS whilst maintaining access to safe, high-quality care for those in the Peel-Murray region.
Through an extensive engagement and onboarding program, the T&C team worked for three years to positively engage RHC staff to bring them into the SMHS team, and a new work environment as public hospital.
Engagement was delivered in collaboration with RHC managers to empower staff to get involved in the transition, culminating in a hugely successful welcome week with over 250 staff attending on day one and over 750 attending in total. The positive impact the T&C team had is evident through the transition rate, with 95 per cent of staff choosing to work for SMHS
6A nursing staff– Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group
Managing a high case load of specialty surgical patients and providing complex levels of advanced clinical care, nurses on 6A have created an environment that not only delivers optimal patient outcomes, but exudes positivity and a highly engaged workforce.
Together, the team set high expectations and hold each other accountable through regular team check-ins, recognise accomplishments collectively, and openly share feedback and patient outcomes with each other.
Through the implementation of their nursing leadership model they identify the skills and conduct expected of all staff, and embrace a mentoring framework to support and nurture these expectations, including providing up-skilling pathways and wide-ranging acting opportunities.
