Top honours at WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards
Four South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) staff members have received top honours at the 2024 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA) on Saturday evening.
This year's awards marked 20 years of shining the spotlight on the important role the State's 43,000 nurses and midwives perform.
Acting Chief Executive Neil Doverty said having four winners from the eight SMHS finalists reflect the commitment to excellence of our nurses and midwives.
“We are delighted to see our staff members acknowledged for their commitment to the provision of high-quality, patient-centred excellent care,” he said.
“We thank them for truly embodying the SMHS vision and values.
“All of our nurses and midwives consistently strive to achieve excellent outcomes for our community.”
SMHS WANMEA winners:
- Biljana Vojnovic, Clinical Nurse Educator at Fiona Stanley Hospital won the Excellence in Education award. Biljana is described as the heart of the ward who sees the potential in everyone, always encouraging nurses to strive to be the very best.
- Fiona Watson, Registered Midwife at Rockingham General Hospital won the Excellence in Midwifery award. Fiona displays empathy and passion in all aspects of her role towards women and staff alike, providing support to students, novice midwives and senior staff. Fiona is committed to making a difference to the woman and families in the maternity unit, and to the community.
- Holly Green has recently completed her graduate midwife program at Rockingham General Hospital and won the Graduate of the Year award. Holly’s innovation has been shown through her partnership with a fellow graduate where she assisted in the creation of a QRS coded app intended to support families transition through parenthood following the birth of their baby.
- Dr Sara Bayes, Professorial Research Fellow – Midwifery, at Edith Cowan University holds an honorary appointment with SMHS and is based at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Dr Bayes has been awarded with the Excellence in Research award.
SMHS finalists were:
- Graduate of the Year – Jessica Snowden Rockingham Peel Group (RkPG)
- Excellence in Registered Nursing – Dorothy Ziyebangwa Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG)
- Excellence in Aboriginal Health – Sharon Beckwith and Nicole Slavin (RkPG)
