Resident medical officer opportunities
Offering tertiary and quaternary opportunities across more than 50 specialties in general hospital and country locations, SMHS offers a large range of rotations and experiences to our resident medical officers (RMOs). These include:

SMHS also offers specific educational and experience streams, including critical care, generalist, surgery, basic physician training medical and medical (non BPT). Each stream has its own senior clinical champions and education program.
In addition, there are opportunities such as:
- completing a diploma of obstetrics and gynaecology
- an anaesthetics and perioperative medicine term
- entering the paediatric or general practice pathway
- service improvement placement with the Institute of Health Leadership
- rural community and country rotations
- a metropolitan Silver Chain placement.
Our Medical Workforce team offers a range of combinations and will be happy to discuss these with you.
The wellbeing of our workforce is central to our vision, and our endeavours include:
- an ongoing roster review project
- regular doctor in training - executive forums
- a fatigue management strategy
- the recent recruitment of one of our senior clinical leaders into the new Chief Wellbeing Practitioner role to lead the evolving multidisciplinary Wellbeing Unit.
Our RMOs are provided with education and professional development opportunities, clinical training and further wellbeing support from our dedicated Medical Education team, and excellent clinical supervision.
