Fiona Wood Public Lecture Series

Professor Fiona Wood stands in a corridorTap into the expert knowledge of leading health professionals and learn about health topics relevant to you and your family at the free Fiona Wood Public Lecture Series.

Presented by SMHS, this free lecture series honours eminent Western Australian surgeon and researcher Professor Fiona Wood AM, renowned for her groundbreaking work in the treatment of burns.

The Fiona Wood Public Lecture Series provides an opportunity for you to hear first-hand about a range of health topics, from ageing and cancer to mental health and recovering from injury.

Lectures are presented by leading healthcare professionals from across our health service.

Our next lecture is planned for June 2025.

The ageing eye: seeing the years clearly – challenges, myths and solutions

Hear Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group Ophthalmologist Dr Jon Lam chat about how you can keep your vision crystal clear as you age.

In this lecture, he touches on the challenges, myths and solutions associated with common eye issues and the small steps you can take to keep the windows to your body healthier for longer.

Jon is an ophthalmologist with specialist interests in vitreoretinal surgery and vitreoretinal oncology, including the management of choroidal melanoma. He currently works out of Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals, as well as the Perth Retina Clinic.

Heart health and cholesterol - keeping your heart in top shape

Listen as Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) cardiologist, Dr Nick Lan chats about all things heart health and cholesterol and how you can keep your heart in tip top shape.

Nick is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia and specialises in preventive cardiology, with a particular interest in disorders of cholesterol. He has authored over 60 articles in medical journals and a book chapter on cholesterol and diabetes.

Fatty liver – why it matters, and what you can do about it

One in three Australians, including some children, have fatty liver disease and may not even know it.

Join us as Fiona Stanley Hospital liver specialist (hepatologist) Dr Koya Ayonrinde discusses what fatty liver is, how anyone can be susceptible to it, regardless of lifestyle, and how it is a major risk factor for heart disease, diabetes and liver cirrhosis.

From drinking alcohol to doing liver cleanses, Koya debunks all the common myths associated with fatty liver disease and lets you know how to effectively prevent or reverse it to live a long and healthy life.

Neurodiversity

Listen as Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group Professor of Mental Health and Consultant Psychiatrist, Professor Wai Chen, and Psychiatry Specialist Registrar Dr Kiri Von Klier highlight some common challenges associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism.

They discuss how they manifest differently in young males and females, and how our mental health specialists work with patients and families to overcome these challenges.

The lived experience of voluntary assisted dying (VAD)

Listen as Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Statewide Care Navigator Service clinical nurse consultants Meg Plaster and Alice Morison:

  • lead a discussion of lessons learned not just in WA, but internationally, as we seek to support the needs of those involved.
