Building for the future

Building for the future

At South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS), we’re committed to creating safer, more welcoming and more effective mental health care environments.

Through a range of exciting projects and infrastructure upgrades, we are expanding services, improving facilities, and investing in the future of mental health across our region.

Whether it’s upgrading inpatient units to enhance safety, building new community facilities, or transforming hospital spaces into modern mental health hubs, these developments are designed with consumers in mind.

Making our mental health spaces safer

In 2023, a statewide audit identified areas within mental health inpatient units that could pose safety risks. In response, SMHS received $6.2 million in funding to make important safety improvements at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital and Rockingham General Hospital.

This work, which began in October 2024, focuses on removing or modifying high-risk ligature points to create safer, more supportive environments for people receiving care.

A new home for Peel Community Mental Health

To meet the growing needs of the Peel region, we’re building a brand-new adult community mental health facility in Greenfields.

Located at 50 Montsalvat Drive, this purpose-built centre will replace the current site at Peel Health Campus (external site).

Thanks to funding from the Commonwealth Community Health and Hospitals Program, the new facility is on track for completion in early 2026 and will offer a modern, welcoming space for community-based mental health care.

New Fremantle Hospital mental health hub

A major redevelopment is underway at Fremantle Hospital to expand and modernise mental health services.

This includes:

40 new inpatient beds, including secure, open, and older adult beds

  • a 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Care
  • a new Neurostimulation Unit offering electroconvulsive therapy (external site) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (external site).

Construction began in late 2023, and the new services are expected to open in 2026.

The refurbished 3-storey building will become a dedicated mental health precinct, bringing the total number of inpatient beds at Fremantle Hospital to 104.

Improved mental health emergency care at Rockingham General Hospital

A new short-stay mental health facility is coming to Rockingham General Hospital, designed to provide fast, specialised care for people experiencing acute mental health episodes.

This project was funded following a commitment made by the McGowan Government during the 2021 WA State Election.

The new centre will include:

  • 8 beds in the Mental Health Emergency Care Centre
  • 2 beds in the Behavioural Assessment Unit.

Together, these 10 beds will offer a safe, purpose-built space for short-term mental health care and help to:

  • ease pressure on the hospital’s Emergency Department
  • improve access to timely support for the Rockingham community.
Expanding mental health services at Peel Health Campus

As part of a major redevelopment at Peel Health Campus (external site), new mental health services are being introduced to better support the needs of the Peel-Murray community.

The redevelopment includes plans for:

  • a brand-new Mental Health Emergency Centre, providing timely, specialised care for people experiencing a mental health crisis
  • 20 new mental health inpatient beds, designed to offer a safe, supportive environment for short-term care and recovery.

These new services will help reduce pressure on emergency departments and improve access to dedicated mental health care in the region.

This expansion is a key part of the Cook Government’s $152 million investment in Peel Health Campus. The goal is to create a more responsive, compassionate, and integrated mental health service for the local community.
