South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) was well represented at this year's WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA), with Fiona Stanley Hospital's (FSH) Monique Carbone announced as winner of the Excellence in Registered Nursing award category, at the gala ball on 10 May 2025.

Currently practicing as a clinical nurse at the FSH Spinal Cord Injury Unit, Monique was recognised for her outstanding ambition and dedication to upskill in her career, demonstrated through various secondments into specialist roles, and her implementation of a special sexual health program for spinal cord-injured patients.

A huge congratulations to Monique, and all winners, on their fantastic achievements.

As the state's leading awards celebrating exceptional nurses and midwives who demonstrate leadership, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to patient care, to be recognised at this level is a huge achievement.

This year's finalists represent a range of specialties, from education and leadership, to person centred care and cultural safety, with SMHS well represented with finalists across five categories:

Excellence in Person Centred Care – Team Award
Endoscopy Team – Peel Health Campus

Excellence in Leadership – Established
Adele King – Rockingham Peel Group

Excellence in Registered Nursing
Deborah Titan – Rockingham Peel Group

Excellence in Aboriginal Health – Rockingham Peel Group
Nicole Slavin – Rockingham Peel Group

Excellence in Education – Rockingham Peel Group
Hayley Jukes – Rockingham Peel Group

SMHS Acting Chief Executive Neil Doverty, said the WANMEA provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate the contributions of nurses and midwives and the important role they play.

"We're incredibly proud of our nursing and midwifery colleagues who help us to achieve our vision of excellent health care, every time, and demonstrate our values of Care, Excellence, Integrity, Respect and Teamwork in everything they do.

"Our nursing and midwifery colleagues have a huge impact on the lives of Western Australians and it's wonderful to see them being recognised at this level for their efforts," Neil said.

SMHS Nursing and Midwifery Area Director Peta Fisher extended her congratulations to Monique on behalf of everyone at SMHS.

"We couldn't be prouder to see Monique representing our registered nursing colleagues and congratulate her for her category win.

"SMHS had such strong presentation at this year's awards which is a testament to the calibre and commitment of our nursing and midwifery workforce, and these professions overall," Peta said.
