Psychiatry training at SMHS Mental Health

Your best place to learn, grow and make a meaningful impact

Psychiatry training at SMHS Mental Health

As part of the 2027 Hybrid Model of Psychiatry Training in metropolitan Western Australia, trainees will benefit from longer-term, stabilised contracts within WA’s major health service providers.

When choosing where to build the foundation of your psychiatry career, South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Mental Health stands out as a destination of choice.

Choose SMHS Mental Health for your basic training

SMHS Mental Health delivers one of the most diverse and progressive mental health portfolios in Western Australia. Serving a population of nearly 700,000, trainees gain exposure to a wide range of clinical presentations across acute, sub‑acute, specialist and community settings.

Two major mental health services, one comprehensive learning network:

  • Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Mental Health (FSFH Mental Health)
  • Peel and Rockingham Kwinana Mental Health (PaRK Mental Health)

Across these services, trainees experience:

  • evidence‑based, recovery‑focused models of care
  • multidisciplinary teamwork across inpatient units, community clinics and outreach teams
  • a full spectrum of mental health presentations across youth, adult and older adult populations.

We have a rich mix of clinical environments

SMHS Mental Health is home to WA’s only women’s-only inpatient mental health ward, offering specialised, trauma‑aware care. It provides extensive inpatient and community programs tailored to:

  • supporting individuals with serious and enduring mental illness
  • delivering early intervention, assessment and treatment
  • promoting meaningful, lasting recovery
  • facilitating seamless transitions back to independence
  • inpatient and consultation-liaison exposure
  • authorised and open wards at Fremantle Hospital and PaRK Mental Health
  • Mental Health Hospital in the Home (HITH) teams
  • consultation liaison services across Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Rockingham General Hospital and Peel Health Campus.

A planned expansion of inpatient services at Fremantle Hospital will increase basic training posts, meaning greater placement availability and broader clinical variety.

Rotations you can access at SMHS Mental Health

SMHS Mental Health offers trainees’ rare opportunities to deepen their clinical expertise, including:

  • perinatal psychiatry
  • FSH Mother-Baby Unit
  • PaRK perinatal mental health service
  • Aboriginal mental health services
  • youth mental health programs
  • specialist eating disorders services
  • early episode psychosis teams
  • addiction psychiatry.

These rotations place trainees at the forefront of specialist mental health care, supported by passionate senior clinicians dedicated to teaching.

A supportive culture of learning

Every SMHS Mental Health site prioritises trainee growth through:

  • protected teaching time
  • research opportunities and supervision
  • journal clubs and peer review meetings
  • supportive, well‑structured after‑hours rosters
  • access to experienced supervisors across multiple specialties.

Work where your life matters too

SMHS Mental Health offers:

  • job security through long-term contracts
  • modern, well-resourced health services
  • a supportive culture that values wellbeing and work-life balance
  • the chance to build your career in one of Australia’s most desirable lifestyle regions.
