South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) is proud to unveil our latest podcast series – Health Stories.

The Health Stories podcast invites our community to hear directly from the SMHS leading healthcare experts to get the lowdown on the science behind all-things public health.

Specifically designed to be engaging and assessible for the average person, the podcast will cover interesting research and platform experts to share the incredible knowledge and expertise within the walls of our hospitals.

In recognition of Mental Health Week, in episode one of Health Stories features Fiona Stanley Hospital Senior Addiction Psychiatrist Dr Kavita Seth shares her knowledge and tips on the growing impact of gaming addiction, particularly among those aged 16 to 24.

SMHS Chief Executive Paul Forden said the podcast is an opportunity to make the extensive work and knowledge of our staff accessible to the those in our south metropolitan catchment.

“Twenty-five per cent of WA’s population lives within the SMHS catchment and we are so privileged to have such an engaged and passionate community,” Paul said.

“This podcast is just another way for us to bring down the walls and invite our community into the fold of our hospitals.”

Paul went on to explain that there is new knowledge being generated within our hospitals every day, and the community should have easy access to it.

“At any one time there are several hundred research studies occurring at SMHS and typically the community wouldn’t know about them, which is a real shame.

“We will use Health Stories to share that knowledge with our community, because it simply wouldn’t be possible without their cooperation and support.

“This is why you won’t find any medical jargon in Health Stories, it is especially designed and produced to be accessible for anyone.

“It is easy and interesting listening, whether you’re driving, cooking or relaxing, this podcast will give you insight you didn’t have beforehand.”

Health Stories began as a limited eight-episode series in 2020, but is set to resume in 2022 with this new direction.

Health Stories is proudly produced by South Metropolitan Health Service.
