Welcoming our new resident medical officers
We are excited to welcome 77 new resident medical officers (RMOs) to South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) as part of our 2026 international medical graduate intake, with around 40 more expected to join in the coming months.
The cohort includes international and interstate doctors, with the majority relocating from Ireland. They will work across Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Peel Health Campus, Rockingham General Hospital and Cockburn Health.
The group recently participated in a four-day orientation program designed to help them settle into their new roles and become familiar with our health service and teams.
During the year, they will complete five rotations of 10–11 weeks across a range of clinical specialties, providing opportunities to broaden their experience and explore future career pathways.
Our health service offers RMOs access to more than 35 specialty areas across metropolitan and regional settings, supported by dedicated medical education, professional development opportunities and experienced clinical supervisors. This experience supports RMOs in making decisions about their future area of specialty practice.
Supporting junior doctors is a key priority for SMHS, recognising the vital role they play in patient care.
As part of this commitment, the Doctor Support Unit (DSU) was established in 2024 to provide junior doctors with a more coordinated support experience. It focuses on providing information and support for professional development, wellbeing and the overall training journey via one dedicated team – meaning our junior doctors can easily access information like rosters, term dates, pay and payslips, and be supported throughout their time at SMHS.
SMHS Area Director of Clinical Services Dr Mark Monaghan said supporting junior doctors throughout their training is essential to building the future healthcare workforce.
“It is one of the core roles of the DSU to support our new colleagues throughout their time with us. We aim to provide a clear pathway for them to access the support, education and opportunities they need to build rewarding careers," Mark said.
Director of Medical Education Dr Rory Trawber shared the excitement of welcoming the new cohort.
“Starting a new role, particularly while adapting to life in a new country, is a significant transition. Our RMOs bring a rich diversity of experiences and perspectives that strengthen our workforce and the care we provide.
“We are delighted to welcome them to Western Australia (WA) and are committed to creating a supportive environment where they can learn and grow.
“Please share all of your best-kept secrets about why WA is so special: beaches, restaurants, coffee spots and all,” Rory said.
