Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Service

Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Service

Fiona Stanley Hospital maternity patients can access specialist mental health care and support during pregnancy and in the first six weeks after birth through our Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Service.

The service works closely with the hospital’s maternity service to provide safe, compassionate care to women experiencing emotional distress or at risk of poor mental health outcomes. This includes women:

  • experiencing mental health conditions during pregnancy
  • whose medical or pregnancy-related conditions may impact their mental wellbeing during pregnancy
  • with pre-existing mental health conditions prior to pregnancy
  • at risk of poor mental health outcomes during pregnancy and in the six weeks after birth.

Our services

As part of their standard maternity care, maternity outpatients and inpatients routinely undergo mental health screening. Women may then be referred to our service for:

  • specialist perinatal mental health consultation and liaison
  • assessment, care planning and treatment recommendations.

Our service also links patients and families with community services for up to six weeks after birth.

Flexible care options

To make it easier for women and families to access support in a way that suits their needs and circumstances, we offer:

  • face-to-face appointments
  • video-link consultations
  • telephone support.

How to access our services

Referrals are only accepted from inpatient or outpatient treating teams.

Women are encouraged to speak with their treating team about any mental health concerns they may have.
